Milfoil update: Amy Smagula, Exotic Species Coordinator from NHDES, surveyed the meadow (the area south of Pond Rd.) in late Spring and found no milfoil. Last year’s chemical treatment was a success. In the main body of the lake our volunteer Weed Watchers are finding sporadic instances of milfoil, mostly in the western end of the lake. They take GPS readings of the areas and report them to the state’s divers. The divers come to the lake and pull the milfoil based on the GPS readings. It is an on-going battle. I would like to thank Steven Anthony, Ken Kimball, Jeff Crothers, Kevin Dudley, Joel Rosen and Rick Christian for their efforts. We can ALWAYS use more trained Weed Watchers.

Shift Change at the Boat Ramp

Lake Host update: We have three paid Lake Hosts, Sophia Shay, Courtney Magoon and Kayla Nelson at the boat ramp 50 hours per week greeting and educating boaters about the spread of Exotic weeds. We also have a number of lake residents who are adding 8 hours per week of Lake Hosting at the ramp. Please thank Eileen Pellegrino, Elaine Sweeney. Robin Thurgood, Kevin Dudley, Shannon and Steven Anthony, Rene and Rick Christian, Brenna and Ken Kimball and Patty and Jeff Crothers for giving their time to keep Beaver Lake beautiful.  Special thanks to Rob Tompkins for all of his time coordinating the program and ensuring the Lake Host program is managed efficiently and there is always coverage at the ramp!

Annual Meeting: The Annual Meeting will be Saturday, August 19 at 10 AM at 24 Coles Grove Rd. Guest speaker is Jason Aube from the NH Department of Environmental Services and he will talk about the Shoreline Protection Act and permits for walls and other waterfront landscaping. We will have a cookout for everyone directly after the meeting. The BLIA will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages, and beverages. We would appreciate it if you would bring a salad or such to share. Coffee and donuts at 9:45. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Board of Directors please contact us at blia@beaver-lake.org.

Special request – if you have any postcards, pictures, books, news articles or anything historic about Beaver Lake, Derry or the area please bring them to the meeting to share.  There will be a table to display the items.  It is always fun to see what the lake looked like years ago and how it has changed.

We are working on a new Beaver Lake T-shirt design. We hope to have them for the Annual Meeting.

Membership update: Thank you to everyone that has submitted their membership donation this year.  We currently have 73 members.  This compares to 115 last year so we are hopeful to match and given the number of brand new members so far, we may even exceed last year’s membership.  The goals of increasing membership include creating more awareness of what is happening around our lake (that’s why we ask for your email address) and to build a stronger community.  We have new membership stickers that you will see around the lake on mailboxes, doors and cars and they have changed color to blue.  Trivia – does anyone know why they changed to blue?  Each year the color will change to match the color of the boat registration stickers.

Boat Parade:  Speaking of boats, due to popular demand and the success of the 2016 Twilight Beaver Lake Boat Parade, it’s coming back.  Thank you for the feedback!  The parade will be on Saturday August 26th at twilight and then a social event where prizes will be award at the Anthony house 20 Coles Grove Rd.  All are invited whether you participate in the boat parade or not.  Start thinking of your ideas and getting ready…
